Navigating Hormonal Health: Dr. Simone Silver’s Insights on Perimenopause, Menopause, and Wellness

29 Aug 2024

In her appearance on Couch Conversations, Dr. Simone Silver shared her expertise on hormonal health, focusing on the challenges and solutions surrounding perimenopause and menopause. She explained that health should be viewed holistically, encompassing physical, mental, societal, and spiritual dimensions. Dr. Silver emphasised the importance of the mind-body connection and highlighted how hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, influenced mood, cognition, and overall well-being.

She discussed the critical role of gut health in hormonal balance, noting that gut bacteria, especially the estrobolome, played a significant part in estrogen metabolism. Dr. Silver pointed out that symptoms, rather than blood tests, often provided the clearest signals of hormonal imbalances, such as breast tenderness, weight changes, mood fluctuations, and sleep disturbances.

Addressing perimenopause, Dr. Silver described it as a period marked by fluctuating estrogen and declining progesterone, leading to various symptoms. She recommended supporting this transition with a high-fiber, plant-rich diet, phytoestrogens (like flax seeds and legumes), and quality probiotics. She also stressed the importance of liver health for hormonal detoxification and mentioned the benefits of supplements such as sulforaphane from broccoli extract.

When discussing menopause, Dr. Silver encouraged women to have informed conversations about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), weighing both the benefits and risks. She explained that HRT could support brain, heart, and bone health, but decisions should be individualised and based on up-to-date scientific understanding.

Dr. Silver also addressed sexual health, noting that libido and sexual function could be affected by hormonal changes, stress, and lifestyle factors. She advocated for a holistic approach, including regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and the inclusion of “vitamin P”- pleasure and play, in daily life.

Finally, Dr. Silver identified common nutritional gaps in modern diets, recommending vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics as foundational supplements for most people. She concluded by encouraging women to listen to their bodies, seek professional guidance, and embrace a comprehensive approach to health during all life stages.
